Originally, Myst didn't have any music because the Miller brothers thought music would interfere with the gameplay. But after a few tests, they realized background music did not adversely affect the game, saying that in fact it "seemed to really help the mood of certain places that you were at in the game."

Myst: Masterpiece Edition

Myst: Masterpiece Edition was an updated version of Myst, with re-rendered images in true color (million colors) instead of 256, newly rendered point-of-view images, better audio effects and music, a hint system and maps.

It was released on August 24, 1999 and for the Mac around June 22, 2000.

On May 5th, 2009, Myst: Masterpiece Edition was released for the iPhone and iPad.

realMyst: Interactive 3D Edition

realMyst: Interactive 3D Edition was a re-make of Myst, featuring various changes over the original: Graphics were rendered by the real-time 3D Plasma engine also later used in Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, weather effects like thunderstorms and sunsets/sunrises were added, minor changes to Myst Island, like the addition of a gravestone for Ti'ana, and Rime as a new Age was added and loosely tied into the storyline.

realMyst for the PC was released around November 20, 2000, and the Mac version around March 30, 2002.

realMyst was released for the iPhone and iPad on June 8th, 2012.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, a visually enhanced revision running on the Unity engine that also includes the graphics of the original Myst game, was released on Steam on February 5, 2014. The remake was updated to v2.0 on January 28, 2015, receiving a significant graphical overhaul, in which several bugs were fixed and the detail of many models and textures was upgraded.

Remake for virtual reality and other platforms

A new remake of Myst for high-definition screens and virtual reality, with the game's worlds fully created in free-roam 3D environments, using Unreal Engine 4, along with features like puzzle randomization. Release for the Oculus Quest was on December 10, 2020 and a version adapted for "flatscreen" monitors was released on August 26, 2021, for Windows, macOS, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
